Solar Powered Plane Which Flies

| May 22, 2010 | 1 Comment

We always talk of small gadgets and devices which on the whole have a significant impact on the environment. If you consider an airplane, however, and think of how actually un-environmentally friendly it is, made of all kinds of metals and toxic elements, consuming special fuel and generating pollution, you would not even think of how it could possibly become environmentally friendly.

Right now it is in an experimental stage, but the solar powered plane, dubbed Solar Impulse, actually flew (glided) for 87 minutes in Switzerland. The Solar Impulse has 12,000 solar cells in its wingspan which power the plane.

The solar plane has a large wingspan and a small body. It can carry only a pilot. It cannot reach any great speeds either, but let us not forget it is still a prototype. It is hoped that there will be solar planes by 2012, though how commercially viable they will be remains to be seen.
