The Department of Transportation gave a grant of $100,000 to Solar Roadways to develop a road which will display warning to pedestrians and drivers telling them whether it is all clear or there are obstacles. If there are people on the panel, the drivers will receive a message on large LED screens telling them and they are supposed to slow down.

As the panels come with heating units, they will not get covered by snow and will still work. The panels will ‘communicate; with one another thanks to built-in microprocessors. Cars will be able to drive smoothly over and not drift.

These roads of the future will be even more energy efficient and will help protect the environment because they will use less toxic construction materials and less oil. Solar Roadways may also use this technology is parking lots, bicycle paths and driveways to increase the safety factor. The Solar Powered Road has already been nominated at the 2010 EE Times ACE Awards as one of the five finalists for ‘Most Promising Renewable Energy Award.’
