If you have a large enough garden, you can surely do with a scarecrow because predatory birds are the bete-noire of gardens. You don’t want all the hard work you do in the garden to go to waste, do you? Birds will eat seeds, young plants or shoots or even fully grown plants. This scarecrow not only gives your garden a quaint, old-worldly feel, but also serves a purpose.

Best of all, it comes in a do-it-yourself kit. It contains all environmentally friendly materials and everything you would need to make a scarecrow. One broom handle, two bamboo canes, two sacks which are actually recycled coffee bean sacks, one ball of string, a marker pen, two needles and an instruction manual comprise the kit.

You can follow the design given, or individualize your scarecrow. You can make this into a family affair, where everyone pitches in to do their bit and children will surely love to help. The only item which is not included in the kit is the straw hat – you can use an old one which you may have in storage or buy one from a thrift shop.
