Toshiba manufactures many appliances and consumer durable – its eco-friendly hi-tech toilet seat cum bidet is only one of them. In the form of a toilet seat with a water dispenser, the bidet uses 55 percent less power than other similar devices, heating the water only when required.

The unique design of the toilet seat is also designed to prevent heat loss. It comes with a variable fan to eliminate fan, so it deodorizes at the same time. The SCS-S510 model by Toshiba comes with an automatic opening and closing lid.

Using a bidet is eco-friendly in any case, because it means you use less toilet paper. Toilet paper is paper which goes down the drain, quite literally and results in the cutting of millions of trees. When you use a bidet you use less paper because you use the paper only to dry yourself.

Tremont Electric is developing a personal charger which can charge small electronic gadgets like MP3 players, cell phones and the like. The PEG (personal energy generator) simply has to be put in a handbag, back pack, haversack or briefcase. The movement will help charge the device and enable it to convert the kinetic energy into a more usable form.

It looks small and sleek and is extremely portable. Tremont Electric hopes to release this device commercially sometime this year.

There are many places in the developed and developing world where water is not safe to drink. In fact, many travel guides tell you only to drink bottled water to be safe. Even at home, many people, when they travel locally, simply buy bottled water for health reasons. As such, the Bobble is an environmentally friendly solution to the large carbon footprint left by using bottled water.

In an exciting development in the medical field, Steve Collins and Arthur Duo developed a foot prosthetic which actually uses energy which is otherwise lost. People, who have physical problems with the ankle, need to wear an artificial foot, which is quite heavy.

Every time the foot is lifted to walk, the ankle pushes off the ground and then is put back. This action uses energy. Thanks to microprocessors in the prosthesis, the energy which is dissipated is recycled. Energy recycling restored ankle push-off to normal and reduced the net metabolic energy penalty to 14 percent.

The microprocessors reuse the energy at the right time, thus reducing dependence on batteries. As a prototype it is still in the experimental stage which uses a very small battery compared to other prosthetic feet, which use motor and heavy batteries.

Apple recently launched its new offering, the iPad. This tablet pc is small and light, and very portable. It is environmentally friendly, being free of arsenic, BFR, mercury and PVR. However, the iPad, besides being a green gadget, cannot do a lot of things. It does not support USB, does not have a DVD drive, and also does not support flash or Adobe. It does not have a web cam either and its HDD is quite miniature. It cannot multi-task and has no GPS. It is however, more portable and if you require something simple for web browsing and net apps, it can do the work.
