If you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you can download an app, the Off Remote, which will enable you to switch off all your computing devices. It can also be used to start computers, switch them off after ongoing work, whether downloading or uploading is over, or even lock your kids’ computers after a certain time.

This app can help you save electricity and reduce your carbon footprint. Made by Hobbyist Software, the app also has a timer function which you can set for any time within 24 hours. It comes with a password protection, so only you can use it. The app can be used for multiple devices.

The Off Remote is compatible with Windows XP, Vista and 7 versions. It can also be used with Macs. The Off Remote is available as a free version with certain limitations. The full version, version 3.0, costs only $2.99, is easy to set up and use.

To give you an idea of how much energy it can save, if each download of the app meant that a computer is switched off for an hour, it would result in a saving of 30,000 kilowatt hours. A very small price to pay for a very large saving in terms of electricity.
