If you are a java junkie and love your espresso wherever you are, this makes for a handy gadget which is environmentally friendly as well. You can carry it with you when you travel, to the workplace, or use it anywhere outdoors. It becomes a great conversation piece as well.

It works like a normal espresso machine in that you have to add the hot water and ground coffee to it. It does not use electricity, but uses hand power, in that you have to pump to induce the pressure. However, you do need hot water for this, so you should have a way to heat the water.

Made of eco-friendly materials, the Handpresso espresso machine makes a great cup of espresso coffee. You can use easy to serve espresso (ESE) available from shops or regular ground coffee to make espresso. It is easy to clean as well.

How would you like to have a virtually unlimited supply of greens virtually at your fingertips? Greens and other vegetables are good for health and now you can grow your own even if you don’t have a lawn or yard, even if you are living in an apartment. Omega’s Volksgarden takes up hardly any space and is easy to use.

It does not depend on sunlight either, since it is a hydroponic gardening system. Would you believe you can grow as many as 80 plants in the small place that it occupies? It takes up only 20 sq. ft. of space.

The Volksgarden looks and works a bit like a Ferris wheel. It rotates every 45 minutes 24 hours a day and gives a better yield than a conventional garden. The unit uses heat, light and electricity and you will need to buy the light, timers and the nutrient solutions. Additionally you will also need the seeds or seedlings. The piece will have to be assembled as per instructions, but you can grow herbs, greens, vegetables and even fruits, flowers and grains.

If you like to having your beverage on the go, you are probably using paper cups which are given by coffee chains. Using paper and then throwing it away is not environmentally friendly. But if you buy this ‘I Am Not A Paper Cup’ then you are making the right choice.

Made of ceramic, this cup is reusable and looks very similar to those made by the coffee chains. While you may buy your coffee from an outlet or a vending machine, or take it from home, you are still drinking your coffee, but being eco-friendly as well.

More importantly it has a double wall, so it keeps your beverage hotter for a longer period of time. You can even fill the inner chamber with hot water for extending the warmth of the beverage. It comes with a silicon lid and is dishwasher safe. Just think how many paper cups you will save while going green!

The majority of homes in western countries are stocked with soda, whether plain to have with alcohol or flavored to have as a carbonated soft drink (also called sparking water, aerated water or soda pop). Never mind that most of these drinks whether calorific or the diet version are extremely unhealthy. Never mind what they cost. What matters is that they contribute to pollution as cans and bottles go to landfills (though they are sometimes recycled, a larger portion of them end up littering or in the waste). The factories they are made in also leave a large carbon footprint.

The Soda Maker consists of a machine housing, a carbonating cylinder, a sealable bottle to use it with and drink mixes. You can even make your own soft drink mixes, for example sugar syrup or sugar substitute and lemon or lime will make you a more natural drink. Once cold water has been carbonated, you just need to add the drink mix or concentrate and mix it well.

Every time you go to the supermarket you are lugging back bottles or cans – these are bulky items and they also increase your grocery bills. You can make the soda at home with the soda maker – all you need is water, the soda maker and the drink mix. It does not use any electricity or batteries.

If you make your own sodas at home, you not only save money but also contribute to making earth a greener planet. Every time you make your own soda you are cutting down on either aluminum or plastic use and thus being environmentally friendly. The device is easy to use, you just put in all the ingredients and press a button or lever several times and your soda is ready.

If you open your fridge or freezer, you will no doubt find plenty of plastic storage boxes and other containers in both. These ubiquitous containers last a life-time and seem to be very user friendly because they can go straight into the microwave for heating or defrosting. They are usually also dishwasher safe. Beware – these containers are dangerous to health.

When they come into contact with foods which are acidic (say containing tomatoes, mayonnaise, sour cream, yoghurt or any other acidic substance), they leach out dangerous substances, including Bisphenol A and phthalates, into the foods. The same thing happens when they are micro waved. These chemicals can be carcinogenic as well as being hormone disruptors and are seriously dangerous to health.

Plastics may be convenient because they are lightweight and air-tight and do not break. But they damage your health and your environment and are best avoided. Instead use glass, ceramic, porcelain or even stainless steel for your storage needs. If you can use recycled glass which is ovenproof as well, that is a good option because then you can put it straight from the fridge or freezer into the oven.

What should you do with the plastics you already have? Phase them out; keep them to store dry foods or even non-food items. Some of them can be used to store stationery items like paper clips, pins, staples or small stuff like junk jewellery. Bigger containers may be used to store letters. Sealed medicines can be stored in plastic as can stuff like batteries, CDs, DVDs and playthings for children.

How often does it happen that whenever you clean out your refrigerator, you find lots of spoilt vegetables and fruits which you just have to throw away? Have you ever though how much money you would save if your fresh foods remained fresh and did not get rotten? This environmentally friendly device just needs a sachet, which has to be replaced every three months. The EGG keeps fruits and vegetables fresh and healthy and eating fresher produce keeps you healthy.

The Ethylene Gas Guardian, kept in your refrigerator can do this – keep fresh foods fresher for longer periods of time. Vegetables and fruits emit ethylene gas and this is absorbed by the EGG. You just have to drop this into the vegetable/fruit bin in your refrigerator and you can have significant annual cash savings.

Ethylene gas oxidizer is approved by the Organic Materials Review Institute as being safe for organic food production, so it is not dangerous to use. It is made by using zeolite which removes odor and humidity and is also a support medium for removing ethylene. Potassium permanganate is then applied to the zeolite using a patented process and these in combination oxidize the ethylene.

When your sachet needs to be replaced, you put the zeolite into your plants, where it will provide extra nutrition and mix with the soil so nothing goes waste. Additionally the packaging EGG comes in is entirely recyclable so it is a great buy for the eco conscious consumer.
